|With the Panjab University fixing a deadline for enrolling in its PhD programmes, students will no longer have the option to enroll as per their own discretion. The varsity has set a deadline of July 30, which has been implemented after approval by the Syndicate and Senate.|
Under the new regulations of the University Grants Commission (UGC), any student enrolling for PhD directly without an MPhil degree will have to undergo a mandatory course in the first semester.
Professor Shelly Walia of the Department of English said, “Earlier, after clearing the entrance test, students could enroll whenever they wanted. But under the new rule, they will now have to undertake some course work and that is why a deadline was required. In this manner, all students will be able to start their PhD at the same time.” Some other recommendations made by the UGC have also been accepted by the Panjab University in to.
Meanwhile, more than 500 students enrolled at the varsity for PhD are yet to get started. They said that as they had enrolled before the new recommendations were implemented, it is not mandatory for them to pursue the course.
Almost all departments have many such pending applications. Another reason for the delay was that none of the departments in the varsity were ready with the course work.
The university officials, on the other hand, said it was up to the particular department to establish the course work.
A senior official said, "The university has accepted all recommendations made by UGC in to and there is no discrepancy. Since both the Syndicate and Senate have approved them, the departments will have to follow the new rules."
